1790 Federal Census, Haverstraw Township, Orange County, NY
Below is an alphabetical listing of all the surnames beginning with
"A" from the 1790 Federal Census for Haverstraw Township, Orange County,
NY, with information from a variety of sources and some notes to help identify
some of the individuals. The information from the census is complete (name
of the head of household and tally of household members) but the added
information is fragmentary from just a handful of sources.
The information from the census follows the heading "1790 Census, Haverstraw:"
The first number refers to the position of the name in the list as it appears
in Heads of Families, 1790, First Census of the United States (Baltimore:
Genealogical Publishing Company, 1976) followed by the page number and
a decimal number to indicate the general position on the page. For example,
Andrew Abrahams was the 117th name in the list on page 140 in the top half
of the third column (.1 = top of first column; .2 = bottom half of first
column; .4 = bottom half of second column, etc.) The numbers in square
brackets give the tally of household members. For example, [ 1, 3, 4, 0,
0 ] indicates "1" free white male of 16 years and upward, including head
of family; "3" white males under 16 years; "4" free white females, including
heads of families; "0" other free persons; "0" slaves. (The last two digits
are usually left out when they are both "0")
In 1790, the Town (or Precinct) of Haverstraw in Orange County, NY
comprised the towns of Haverstraw, Stony Point, Ramapo, and Clarkstown
in present day Rockland County, NY. "District:" gives the place of residence
within Haverstaw based on information from other sources. For example,
Andrew Abrahams was the 89th name in the "Tax List of the Town of New Hempstead
(Now Ramapo Township, Rockland County, New York) For the Year 1794" published
in The Rockland Record, Vol. III, Being the Proceedings and Historical
Collections of the Rockland County Society of the State of New York, Inc.
for the Year 1940, Edited by George H. Budke, Historian of the Rockland
County Society. Sometimes the evidence for a particular District is listed
after the "Events:" heading.
Church memberships not otherwise identified are from the "Records of
Clarkstown Reformed Church, BC-49" (Unpub. MS, 1917) compiled by George
H. Budke. For example, John Ackerson, spelled "John Eckerson,"
was number 254 in a membership list of the Clarkstown Reformed Church
dated 1794.
Question marks indicate more than one person with the same name;
the information could not be attributed to a particular indivudual with
certainty.
